for waking up with us. i'm gurvir dhindsa. >> glad to have you along. before we get to tony and our forecast up here, flooding is causing a left yes to fail this morning. it is forcing more people to evacuate. >> residents in central wisconsin starting fleeing their homes when that levee started to fail last night. wisconsin river has cut off people in one neighborhood in the town of portage. it is not clear exactly how many of the 300 residents are now stranded. they did not heed the warning to evacuate. the levee has not completely collapsed but officials say it is leaking. >> we have a little bit of wet weather out there this morning. >> some rain showers across the area. none ever them particularly heavy at this hour but we could show some more rainfall develop during the morning and during the daytime and some of it could be heavy at times. we'll start with the satellite- radar composite, show you how things are shaping up across the region. there you go. you can see a pretty good amount of rain. let me tell you this. we have a variety of radars that we look at. this one is overplaying

you see the capitol dome. thank you for joining us for fox 5 morning news. i'm gurvir dhindsa. without any more hesitation, let's go over to tucker to find out what is happening with earl. it is huge, tuck. >> and it is getting bigger. let's go right back to it. category 2 hurricane. maximum winds, 105 miles per hour. the good news is the eye of the storm will stay just offshore during the next several hours. even though the beach communities from the vines right up to southern new england are going to take a beating, this could be a lot worse as this is a major storm. a lot of cloud cover across the washington area. when you head out this morning, there will be clouds. we'll go partly sunny this afternoon but you can see a lot of rain showers. bands of rain associated with earl starting to make their way inland not only in north carolina but in southern virginia and not too long here, even the maryland beaches will start to get in on the rain. let's look it the temperatures here in washington. we are now 78 degrees. with all the cloud cover, we are not cooling off overnight. 75 in fre

for being with us. i'm steve chenevey. >> and i'm allison seymour. that pesky little humidity is creeping back into the forecast. tony perkins is joining us with the details. not just the nasty humidity. >> i keep saying that. today is a transition day. we've had great weather for the week. today is not so great. it will be humid, warmer, more clouds and it will set us up for a wonderful weekend. high clouds streaming through early this morning. you'll see some sun filter through but the clouds will thicken up and by tonight mostly cloudy skies. right now 69 in the capital. 62 at dulles. dover, delaware, 67 degrees. today clouds on the increase. warm temperatures. more humid than it has been. breezy with winds out of the south at 10-15 miles per hour. that's a look at the weather. now an update on traffic and for that we go to julie wright. >>> not so bad right now if you're at the wilson bridge. the inner loop of the beltway slowing leaving braddock toward 66. and the lanes are open. eastbound 66 tied up as you work in from the virginia visitor's center and nutley street to the beltway.

news from capitol hill where there has apparently been a shooting possibly involving u.s. capitol police. >> this happened at second and c streets southwest. it was just about an hour ago and that is near the demeanor of health and human services building. -- the department of health and human services building. sherry ly joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. we are actually right here near the capitol, the ray bun building as well which houses some of the house members and then over there is the hght and human services building that you mentioned. town there on c street is where the shooting happened. here what is we know right now. the shooting apparently involving u.s. capitol police just before 5:00 this morning. there are reports that the suspect was shot in the and. he was down but conscious. this was a 200 block of c street in southwest. again, happening just before 5:00 this morning. there were a number of evidence markers on the scene. typically, those would be evidence of shell casing suggesting perhaps that multiple shots were fired again based on the inf

and a look at the week ahead coming up in just a little bit. stick with us for that. >> let's check in with julie wright. she has the latest on the traffic situation out there. >> good morning to you all. we are talking about loudoun county. before a serious crash that popped up on us along route 9 out at hamilton station road. we are told that the highway is blocked off in each direction. that is route 9 at hamilton station road currently closed because of an accident. for those that are traveling along northbound i-95 here in lorton, nice, easy commute continuing up towards the beltway. no problems to report on the beltway leading annandale to merrifield and you will fine that traveling at the wilson bridge, all lanes are open and traffic is running smoothly there. top side of beltway, the outer loop as you work your way around from 650 new hampshire avenue and continue to silver spring, light traffic volume there as well. you will find lanes are open coming southbound as you travel from 109 out towards the split. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >>> it appears the ea

is happening with earl. i'm gurvir dhindsa. >> i'm steve chenevey. thank you for being with us this thursday morning. let's say good morning to tucker barnes and get a look at that forecast. >> just getting latest information here as we speak. believe it or not, earl is getting stronger by the hour. i don't think it is likely to get much more intense. it's very strong hurricane. let's get right to it. i want to he show you vipir. i want to show you the satellite-radar there. you go. can you see that the storm has an enormous eye here. wave got hurricane-force winds about 90 miles from the center. tropical storm wind about 230 miles from the center. just getting the latest information, maximum winds now 145 miles per hour, gusts over 1 # 06789 the pressure has been falling the last couple of hours. so not losing any strength here as it approaches coastline. hurricane warnings now for much of north carolina and even here along the lower eastern shore, we've now got tropical storm warnings and hurricane watches. we are getting ready for it as it pushes offer to the north and then to the north a

and thunderstorm activity is out of here after providing some of us fireworks during the evening hours and we are left with warm temperatures. didn't really cool us down a whole lot. 74-degree at reagan national. 67 in baltimore. 67 out at dulles. you get the idea here, these temperatures much warmer than they've been the last couple of mornings. 67 in winchester. the shower and thunderstorm activity was kind of spotty in nature, kind of isolated. some of us got some pretty big storms. that has slipped off the coast. the morning fog will burn off and we'll be left with a hot and humid one this afternoon with once again temperatures jumping into the 90s. remember, it is the first full day of fall. our average high temperature is in the upper 70s and we are talking about 90s. mother nature is not willing to give up on summer quite eighty. highs later this afternoon with lots of sunshine in the low 90s. 91 here in town and just hot. not expecting a shower and/or thunderstorm activity later today. so it will be a quiet one. >> let's see if it is quiet out o
